The holidays are coming up, with big family dinners and lots of family members gathered around the table. If you’re usually the host for these big dinners, you probably have a good collection of spare dining chairs. But you don’t use all those chairs every day, so what do you do with the chairs that aren’t part of your regular dining room furniture? The simplest solution is to keep them in storage. However, you want to ensure your furniture stays in good condition while it’s in storage so it’s ready for action at the next holiday dinner.
Keep your extra dining room furniture in good shape while it’s in storage. Here’s how you should store your spare wooden chairs.
Clean Them First
Before you store anything, you should clean it thoroughly. Cleaning your chairs will prevent anything from growing on them while in storage. Use mild, neutral cleaners on the wood and clean any stains from the upholstery. Let the fabric dry completely before storing the furniture.
Treat the Wood
While we usually worry about things getting damp in storage, they can also dry out, especially wood. Using furniture polish or a similar treatment on the wood before storage will prevent it from drying out and cracking. Treating the wood also prevents outside moisture from penetrating it, so all you’ll have to do is dust your chairs off a little when you pull them out of storage.
Control the Temp
If you can, store your furniture in a temperature-controlled environment. Extreme heat or cold causes wood to expand and contract, weakening the wood over time. Your basement or garage are good storage options, but not everyone has that kind of space. If you have to store your extra furniture in your shed, cover them with a moving blanket or a tarp to insulate them against extreme temperatures.
